Chinese Hospital

Years ago I went to visit a sick relative in Guangzhou north of Hong Kong by about a half day’s train ride. There, I found what had to be the most backward hospital I’ve every been to. There were no hospital personnel on the ground floor. I went from room to operating room shouting and causing a scene. My plan was for security to stop me and then I could ask directions. Well, they fooled me. While coming out of a boiler room a had to step back to allow a motorcycle past. That didn’t attracted security either. The rider was using the hospital lobby as a short cut from the main street out front to the parking lot behind the hospital. After half an hour of wandering I found my sick relative on the 5 floor (I found help riding the freight elevator up and down a few times). The recovery rooms at this hospital were the self serve kind. In the US we call it BYOB (Bring Your Own Beer). All clothes, food, bed sheets, booze and cigarettes are supplied by the family of the sick. We brought our share, spent some sympathy time, then ran like hell for civilization. BTW: The relative was fine. Here he is in bed #40, sitting up and listening to the radio.
