I painted in Big Wave Bay today down at the beach. I sat under the #2 lifeguard stand and painted an abstract of the rocks and lichen. The rocks here are a beautiful burnt orange and are striking against the blue of the ocean. Today I spent more time just looking at the rocks themselves and the different colors in them. Besides the orange and aqua lichen, the rocks are streaked with a black varnish (much like the rocks in the deep southwest of the US). All together very striking contrasts. And even for people who have no interest in painting rocks, this is a great place to sit and watch the planet turn.

Side note: I had planned on going into the city to paint and draw this afternoon, but am having some trouble at home. Behind me a new house is being built. And so far this week the construction workers have borrowed my bicycle without asking (I caught them as they rode it back from lunch), filled my yard with construction debris, left my gate open last night and the dog got away (they’ve been using my yard to get to the back of the construction site), and finally, my dog has concrete in his fur. Maybe I’ll just head over to Wan Chai and get one of those cheap web cams. I’m not happy about needing a camera and they have already caused me to buy two padlocks, but I can’t trust them not to rob me blind when they are done building. 🙁

I had a free hour this afternoon around 4pm. I ran out and drew these pictures as the sun went behind the mountains. The sun’s rays were very clear cutting through the haze. Bugs ate me alive though. No more drawing at dusk without bug spray.
