Giant Cruise liners like this one frequently come into downtown Kowloon to Ocean Terminal. This is an old central hub of Kowloon. Behind me is the main bus stop. Out of the left side frame of this drawing is the Star Ferry which I drew last week. And a few minutes walk East is the Kowloon Railroad Terminal. Nathan Street, which terminates here, is the oldest street in Kowloon and construction first started back in 1861. Nathan Street is named after Hong Kong’s 13th governor. Nathan Street used to be called Robinson Street, after the 5th governor. I’ve heard 2 different stories about why the street changed names. Wikipedia says it was changed to avoid confusion because Hong Kong Island already had a Robinson Rd (and still does). However, a history book I found at the library says that Robinson built the street too small, only 3 lanes across. Nathan claimed this would never do as the British Empire had great plans on biggering and biggering. He had shop owners and residents alike take one large step backwards from the street to made it the 4 wide lanes it is today. It is still the widest road in Hong Kong or Kowloon. Anyway, the shop owner and residents’ society were very pleased with being forced to move 10′ back and decided to name the street after Governor Nathan.
Today was very hazy and humid (85%) but the temp held out at a cool 15C. Rain is still holding off. I may get lucky and not have to stay home.
Side note: where can I buy a 14″x17″ sketch pad in HK? All I can find here are “A” size pads which are too tall and narrow for my taste.
Awesome drawing. I really like your style, and it’s cool to be able to see different parts of Hong Kong through your drawings.
Thanks BW, after 25 years of drawing I’m finally getting somewhere 😉
For 14 x 17, do you have a specific brand you like?
No specific brand. Just 60-75 pages for less than $100. I like spiral bound. Do you know where to find one? Thanks.
I checked a few shops, seems crazy they either do not have 14 x 17, or one of the shop have, but asked for HK$ 125 for 20 pages! Within HK$ 100, I only got 2 options: 11 x 14, 30 pages @ HK$ 75 from Canada // 11 x 14, 90 pages @ HK$ 110 from China. LOL
Hi Beatrice, thanks for checking. Looks like you saw the same things I did. The only paper in this size is watercolor based and very expensive. But, I’ve found someone one going back to the US next month who will pick up a few pads for me. I’m also headed to Korea this weekend and see if they have something different up there. Thanks again for checking. 🙂
