western-market

(  Ok, it’s 11:30 at night and I’m still working on this painting. I’m going to bed. I’ll finish it in the morning. I think this one a day painting thing is going to kill me. So from here on out it’s 5 drawings and 1 painting a week. That’s something I can handle without having to leave my family. They shouldn’t have to suffer for my art until after I’m rich 😛  )

I went Sheung Wan today and decided to paint the Western Market. It’s one of a few colonial buildings left in Hong Kong. Sheung Wan district is known for its dried food markets and this building stands out as something very unusual. It is late 18th century Romanesque.  And while the district smells of drying scallops and fish, Western Market is mainly occupied by tailors catering to rich tourists and weddings. The modern looking round structure I believe is an air vent for the MTR (mass transit rail) underground.

I’ve had to change painting methods today. I placed my stool too close to the road and inhaled a lot of exhaust and particulate matter. It really began to irritate my throat. I spent just enough time to finish the drawing, then took photos for color and shading references. I’m writing this on the MTR headed back home and will finish painting this later today after I post this text.

But first, I’m off to my favorite Shanghai restaurant in Shau Kei Wan for dumplings and noodles. That should rinse the grit out of my throat quite nicely. Mmmmmmm…….. dumplings……..
