I had a full day to myself and quickly ran off this morning to Mong Kok to see the flower market. All over Hong Kong shops are putting out red rabbits, fire crackers and anything else that can be manufactured in bright red and gold. It’s very spectacular to see these shops because they put yellow heat lamps over the store fronts causing the eye to be very dazzled by the glow of a new year coming. That was also the case a the flower market where heat lamps were everywhere making the “gut” plants strung along the awning more gold than should be possible. The whole district was very fragrant and the weather was gorgeous at 18C and just a few upper level clouds.

Despite having great painting conditions I was not able to finish this painting at the market. 3 times I was moved: 1st by a shop keeper pruning giant banana leaves, then the police said I was too close to the road, and finally by a truck that blasted by filling my paint palette with dirt and pine bark. I guess the police were right. I packed up my stuff, got a quick photo of the shop, and headed over to the bird market up the street.

The bird market was much more quiet than the wholesale business going on at the flower shops. I had plenty of places to sit as well. Too bad I only had 1/2 and hour left before I had to start for home. At least I got this drawing done before I left and the clouds began to roll in.

Several days ago, I realized that your logo at the top of blog had changed, but wasn’t sure the significance. Now I do: New Years and the year of the Rabbit. Great idea to paint New Years’ scenes and New Years’ preparations. I am looking forward to more.

The drawing done in the bird market is wonderful. Sorry it was such a rough go but the drawings and painting are really worth the trouble and effort. Very nice.

Thanks Linda, appreciate the support. But, any day spent drawing and painting can’t be too bad. Trouble is what happens when I don’t have anything to paint 😉
